The New Website

The new website is looking good now. Steve has done a grand job and he has all our gratitude. The new Miva 5 ecommerce upgrade looks much better than the old site; it’s much easier to manage; all the pages are now in the ecommerce app instead of being partly static pages as before; the site owner can edit content fully within the application; the URLs are a whole lot better; Miva 5 is a big improvement on Miva 4; and there are a ton of minor improvements here and there.

There are still some issues with duplicate URLs and other odds ‘n ends but they’ll no doubt get resolved. If you need a solid ecommerce solution on a small scale, or a big one that will handle 100,000 products, then Steve Strickland can probably help you out with a nicely-customised Miva 5 ecommerce store.

And if you phone him you’ll think you’re talking to Sam Elliott. That deep Texan drawl is a dead ringer for The Stranger in ‘The Big Lebowski’ . He should go into advert voice-overs.

Well, I never thought I’d get my website fixed by Sam Elliott…

Website Upgrade

Monday, August 4th, 2008

[rolygate]

Monday August 4th is D-Day for the new Lordprice website. A big upgrade has seen many improvements and plenty of changes.

Right now there are still a lot of dead links as we progress the changeover, but things look to be going OK. By tomorrow (Tues 5th) the situation should have stabilised.

The state of the checkout is an unknown quantity at this stage. If you get jammed up in there, please let us know! At the moment we are working on redirects - fixing it so if you go to an old page you get sent directly to the new equivalent page. However, it will be several days before this looks as if it will be complete - there are a lot of them to do.

Just go to your intended page via the menus on the front page and you should be OK. If you get lost in a black hole, then let us know, OK?

New page: using the online store

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

[rolygate]

Just added a neat little page on how to use the online store - you can see it on the left navbar at the bottom. It’s a run-through on how to buy online, and takes it step by step all the way to a credit card purchase. The idea is to show newcomers what it’s all about, and discuss the pros and cons of online shopping.

It may not have much relevance to old hands; but nevertheless it shows how we do things and the way we run the business. All these things are a ‘work in progress’ to a certain extent, of course, so various things need to be added.

Now, I can see the obvious, that it doesn’t explain about security certificates - better add that pronto. It also raises the interesting question of why I haven’t put the logo (or logos actually) on the front page. The security certificate authorities, I mean. This site’s are issued by Verisign and Thawte, so we ought to promote that, as they are the gold standard and not to be compared with your ‘$30-quick-and-it’s-in-the-post’ merchants.

Well, it’s not so much this site of course as we are ‘embedded’ within a secure server ecommerce set-up provided by our hosts and the merchant partners, but anyway.

Now, the hunt for the logos, I guess…

Art Deco pictures

Now the Art Deco section has been completely revemped and is a separate category. Lots of interesting things in there - have a look. If you can’t see the new page (which is a ’static’ version with a nice layout, not the dynamic server version), then ‘force reload’ your browser: hit Cntrl+F5 (control and function #5) at the same time. This forces the browser to request a new page version from the server, and normally resolves most ‘old page in memory’ issues.

If this doesn’t do the trick, you may need to flush your cache. Don’t worry, it’s painless. Go to your browser’s Tools menu, at the top, and select Options - Advanced - Network - ‘clear now’. This flushes out all old pages from memory, and you have to reload a new one. That’s for the Firefox browser of course, which you’ll be using unless you are a masochist.

It doesn’t fix the problem of the server itself having an old page in cache, but that’s another story…

The Art Nouveau section is now complete, with the Leonetto Cappiello section flagged. That green devil is really something - where can I get a bottle of that?
