Struck a problem with the site certicate logos - the ‘Secured by…’ etc logos that show who audits the security at the shopping cart end of the site. The problem is this: if you are an independent operator who sets up your own store, on any old server, you can get a certificate to show that the route out to your merchant partner’s credit card processing facility is secure (assuming it is, since it will be audited first - at least by those whose certificates are actually worth having).
However, if you are located within an entire secure ecommerce facility, with grade one security starting at the door so to speak, you can’t have a certificate. Even though the building, the servers, the entire set-up are all 1000% more secure than where a site owner just has a secure connection to his card agent.
This is because the certificates are issued to the site hosts, not the individual site owners (all 500 or 1,000 of them), so they cannot display the appropriate logos.
It doesn’t matter that the entire operation is much more secure than a go-it-aloner’s. The only way around this, as far as I can see at the moment, is for individual site owners to purchase their own (additional and completely unnecessary) certificates. You can be in a postnuke bunker facility with more security than Fort Knox, have multiple top-grade certificates from Verisign etc (as we do) and still have no right to display the logo on the front page.
This is something of a dichotomy, or a dilemma, or another one of those di- thingies. If you know of answer, please tell me, because I have to find a solution. And of course Lord Price is occupied elsewhere, feeding the pheasants or something, and in any case cares not a jot for anything remotely connected to technical affairs.

Just added a neat little page on how to use the online store - you can see it on the left navbar at the bottom. It’s a run-through on how to buy online, and takes it step by step all the way to a credit card purchase. The idea is to show newcomers what it’s all about, and discuss the pros and cons of online shopping.
It may not have much relevance to old hands; but nevertheless it shows how we do things and the way we run the business. All these things are a ‘work in progress’ to a certain extent, of course, so various things need to be added.
Now, I can see the obvious, that it doesn’t explain about security certificates - better add that pronto. It also raises the interesting question of why I haven’t put the logo (or logos actually) on the front page. The security certificate authorities, I mean. This site’s are issued by Verisign and Thawte, so we ought to promote that, as they are the gold standard and not to be compared with your ‘$30-quick-and-it’s-in-the-post’ merchants.
Well, it’s not so much this site of course as we are ‘embedded’ within a secure server ecommerce set-up provided by our hosts and the merchant partners, but anyway.
Now, the hunt for the logos, I guess…

Now the Art Deco section has been completely revemped and is a separate category. Lots of interesting things in there - have a look. If you can’t see the new page (which is a ’static’ version with a nice layout, not the dynamic server version), then ‘force reload’ your browser: hit Cntrl+F5 (control and function #5) at the same time. This forces the browser to request a new page version from the server, and normally resolves most ‘old page in memory’ issues.
If this doesn’t do the trick, you may need to flush your cache. Don’t worry, it’s painless. Go to your browser’s Tools menu, at the top, and select Options - Advanced - Network - ‘clear now’. This flushes out all old pages from memory, and you have to reload a new one. That’s for the Firefox browser of course, which you’ll be using unless you are a masochist.
It doesn’t fix the problem of the server itself having an old page in cache, but that’s another story…

The Art Nouveau section is now complete, with the Leonetto Cappiello section flagged. That green devil is really something - where can I get a bottle of that?

The blog works just fine now. Tony, you’ll have to decide whether you want the feedbox live on the front page or not; or just the link via the left navbar.

Does it work? Seems to. Next job is to get the feed set up to the Lordprice home page. That’s gonna be a bit tougher but I guess we’ll hack it. And Tony just says “How come my blog’s not working yet?” Easy for the non-techies I suppose. It must look so simple to them; but the WP blog set-up is the easy bit (very slick) - the interesting part is getting a teaser onto the front page somehow…
