Fine dining is perhaps the subject closest to Lord Price's heart (after Lady Price, the Marquess and Baron Price, of course) and it's our aim to experience personally each of the restaurants, venues and situations for which we have food pictures, drinking cartoons and eating images. That gives us quite a challenge, as the abundance of quality, classic restaurant images on these pages demonstrates.
French cuisine is by reputation the world's finest and in France they are of course masters of style and fashion, so it's natural that restaurant images and dining pictures from France form a major part of our collection. The French magazine Le Sourire cartoons and drawings are a rich source and of course Paris images and cocktail pictures evoke mood and scene. Champagne is Lord Price's natural and favourite beverage and there are some stylish champagne pictures in our collection. The English, by contrast, are stronger on ceremony and formal social convention, so we see images of afternoon tea and the Nippy from the Lyons' Corner House. The Englishman's ability to make fun of himself is an attractive characteristic and when coupled with formal convention and etiquette this gives some of the most amusing restaurant cartoons from the pens of, amongst others, H M Bateman and the Georgian genius Thomas Rowlandson, master of the eating cartoon. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
