Cornwall (Kernow in Cornish), is the English county on the end of the South-West Peninsular, with the proud, distinctive culture of a people who think of themselves as on an island, with the sea on 3 sides and the River Tamar and Bodmin Moor separating them from Devon and the English to the East. Appropriately, it has the Southernmost tip of England, with the Lizard, and the Westernmost tip with Lands End.

Cornwall traditionally has relied on its mining, fishing and agriculture, but tourists are an important crop these days too. St Piran’s boys have always been more than a bit touchy about English rule, with the rebellion of 1497 where the Cornish marched all the way to Deptford (via Guildford in Surrey of all places, so must have done the old A30/A303/A3 trip) to be defeated by King Henry VII. And of course Bishop Trelawny was locked up in the Tower by James II, giving rise to Hawker’s classic ballad:

… And Shall Trelawny die?
Here’s twenty thousand Cornish men
Will know the reason why! …

Well wherever you are in Kernow we have the pictures. North Cornwall, South Cornwall, West Cornwall and inland. Appropriate for the artists’ favourite holiday spot, we have a section of St. Ives pictures, and of course lots of pictures of the Isles of Scilly, the site of wrecks and flowers out in the Atlantic Ocean.

Antique maps of Cornwall and railway posters advertising the Cornish treats available for the holidaymaker complete our selection – please feel free to dive in like a cormorant off Gull Rock!
