Italian Car Pictures

Italian cars . Our Italian car posters reflect the very richness and contrast of that phrase.

On the one hand, the glamour of Ferrari, Bugatti (some fine Bugatti Art Deco adverts here) and Maserati. Plus some slightly less well-known Italian marques such as Isotta, SCAT, Spa and Bianchi.

On the other, Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. Brands struggling to maintain their reputations against a history of poor workmanship and quality. Despte that, they still produced some cool Italian car art, as our pictures show.

Although Ferrari may be the glamour boys of Italian motor lore, we confess to a soft spot for Fiat. They managed to produce a people's car, the Cinquecento (500) to rival the German VW Beetle, French 2CV and British Mini and brought motoring to the Italian masses. They might have fared well in the dry climate of southern Italy, but their rusting tendencies were a bit of an issue in the somewhat damper northern environment.

Still, Italians have no monopoly on error. A few years ago Lord Price's mate Nick was considering buying a Maserati (with those cute hockey-stick rear lights). Balking at the £60,000 price tag he mistakenly decided to invest in a sure-fire winner. A company called Marconi; a simple mistake given the similarity of the names. The rest, as they say, is history. Or, as Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs so quaintly put it, 'shares [now] of negligible value'.
