Jules Chéret was born in Paris in 1836. He came from a poor background and his work had to provide his living, so his art had a solidly commercial dimension. He created posters for the music halls and theatres of Belle Epoque Paris such as the Folies Bergeres. He was so successful that he was commissioned to produce advertisements for a wide variety of industries and his work featured in many advertising campaigns. His distinctive flowing style is the very epitome of Art Nouveau. He is oft-times called the father of the modern poster.
He died in 1932 and is buried in the Cimetière Saint-Vincent in Montmartre; an appropriate place for him to rest. Modern fame has come from the use of his poster for the Parisian toyshop Aux Buttes Chaumont in the popular TV show Friends. It's now better known perhaps as Friends Poster Jouets
