Sailing: sport of kings and countrymen, and therefore the great leveller. Offshore, a king, or princess even, will only be accorded the respect they are due as a sailor. Charles II was our first 'official' yachtsman, having received a jacht as a gift from Holland, which is of course why we use the word now; though any self-respecting sailor refers to his or her craft as a boat, not a yacht. Yachts tend, now, to be the motorised version of the type. Charles' boat (a small sailing ship in reality) came complete with eight guns – a fine old tradition well worth reviving.
